Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
