Wythenshawe Vets Over 35s are located in southern Manchester and play in the Cheshire Vets Division Top Division.

The squad list this season boasts 9 former top-flight players, with a combined nearly 1,800 top-flight appearances.

Ireland started playing for the team in preseason this summer through close friend and present Wythenshawe teammate Blake Norton, and the former Republic of Ireland midfielder then invited other former professionals, who all compete in a midweek nine-a-side match, to join in.

So great is the bench strength at the club, he made his first game at full-back.

"It's a little unusual but then, I love running and just move forward - I'm not staying back that much," he added.

"I warn my centre-back 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to keep running.

"That movement is what I'm looking for. It's good fun."
