Israelis mark two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Future governance of the area
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the night falls, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of several people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said another two victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south region, medical staff reported.
