Jurgen Klopp admits coming back to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that a future comeback remains something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-season tenure which brought Champions League success and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds roles in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
They secured England's top flight last season, though countless followers who revere Klopp would welcome the notion that he might come back one day. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I refuse to lead another team within the country. Which implies should it be the Reds...absolutely. In theory, it could happen.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests I might decide later on, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, it's not necessary. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Questioned regarding the specific conditions would have to unfold to bring him back to the dugout, he confessed he isn't eager toward coming back. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing under bad weather through long matches; I don’t miss going to press conferences multiple times weekly or doing numerous chats a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, yet sharing a meal with the team having a nice chat, that’s nice. Success was frequent meaning regularly positive atmosphere at the club. I still have Van Dijk's laughter in my ear for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
Klopp was full of praise of the current boss, crediting him due to the changes which secured the championship last term. The team has suffered four consecutive matches in all competitions post heavy investment, but he rubbished the notion of it representing a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if spoken against. He’s an incredible talent. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. This is a well-built balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in while in charge, along with the consequences on Liverpool. The forward died tragically in a car crash with his brother recently.
“Who can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the squad missing him. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A profound tragedy for the entire squad also. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it to justify results yet it's the reality. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Dealing with that emotionally is not easy. Impossible.”
