New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
