The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
