On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about remaining in charge after his current deal. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the identical team Arsenal played just after his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

Given that second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

Arteta is tied down by 18 months remaining on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, emphasizing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, commending the strong backing from the board and owners, while singling out the players' commitment as the key factor. “At the end, the critical component are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team approaches the Everton match managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is anticipated to sideline him for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
