The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his victory in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the need to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
