The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Hunt for Killer.
The pair of scholars who were killed in Saturday’s mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant carried on following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences publicly, remarking: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, family members said.
The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.
The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the media outlet.
Officers that entered the inn recovered a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a shining example in that particular place as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was known for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and fellow students and lament the passing of his promising future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
