While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many local residents, detected cracking sounds echoing through the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every instinct would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Chaos

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews caring for dozens of the injured.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the violence transforming into a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including going into the surf to save people who were struggling.

After the events, statements of gratitude flooded in. One post shared gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of beach patrol published a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the care directed at our personnel,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those affected.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many full-time lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the violence began until late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate selflessness every day in ensuring our world-famous shores secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such hatred.”
